Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are one of my favorites.
Truly one of the best writers in music, Nick Cave covers everything from the profoundly morbid to the religious (maybe there isn’t much difference…) seamlessly. Anything released prior to 2002, in my opinion, is flawless.
Here is a duet with PJ Harvey off the “Murder Ballads” record, “Henry Lee“:
03 Henry Lee
Also, the inspiration for this song came from one of a similar theme and an identical name by an old folk singer named Peggy Seeger. It was too large a file to link here, but worth listening to if you like Cave’s version.
Short lyric from “People Just Ain’t No Good”
It ain’t that in their hearts they’re bad, They can comfort you, some even try
They nurse you when you’re ill of health, They bury you when you go and die
It ain’t that in their hearts they’re bad, They’d stick by you if they could
Ah, but that’s just bullshit, baby
People just ain’t no good
